Kali Protectives markets helmets and body armor to some of the most aggro downhill and freeriders out there. I can’t say that I’m up for either of those things. What I am up for is track racing.
This year I decided to get geeky and look for a helmet with some specific design criteria. I have a tendency to drop my head down when I’m going all out on my track bike and I realized that my tried and true Bell Sweep (along with most road helmets) has all kinds of weird fins in the back that stick up in the air when I turn my head down.
I got to thinking that if the aero helmet is one of the most important aerodynamic upgrades for triathlon then taking my head position into account during races might be worth while.
Unlike your typical road helmet the Kali Avita does NOT have any kind of protruding fins or ridges coming from the back.
In fact its overall profile is almost round like a bmx helmet (once you remove the visor that is). It cut’s a pretty similar silhouette to some of those extremely high end helmets many of the top international track racers use with one significant difference. It is a well vented helmet. I was actually surprised by just how ventilated it was.
Long story short did it make me faster? Probably not much. But it kept my head cool and with Kali’s “composite fusion” technology it kept it safe too. It has a bit of a non-traditional look but it worked great.
