A neat short video from The Seattle Ranonneurs. 200k bike ride at night? Sounds pretty fun actually.

I have been toying around with longer self supported rides and have found myself really drawn to this type of riding. Randonneuring is essentially long distance, self supported, riding where the overall goals/feel is more exploratory rather than competitive. Many of these types of rides can take in excess of 15 hours! Not your usual weekend training ride.
The DC Randonneurs put on 200-600k events March through December. It’s on my 2012 to do list to hit some of these events with my buddy Will over at the RVA Bike Commuter blog.
As I have been dialing in my commuter bike I have been keeping a keen eye on how my equipment choices will work with taking it on these events. I find many of the equipment choices ingenious and elegant. A quick google image search of randonneur bikes will give you an amazing assortment of beautifully crafted machines.
Maybe someday soon Richmond will have its own chapter of Randonneurs and some events like this a bit closer to home.
